Post Office Volunteers Needed!

*** Sent on behalf of 51/CS ***

Team Osan,

The holiday season is the Osan post office's busiest time of year and the

volume of mail increases by at least 300 percent. New mail has started to

pour in and the Post Office needs your help to clear it out just as quickly.

Please remember to check your PO box frequently and pick up your packages as

soon as you can. Also, holiday volunteers are always needed in order to

process and deliver the mail as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Individual or group volunteers are welcomed, but all volunteers must contact

the post office for scheduling.

***Osan Trick or Treat Bash UPDATE***

I wanted to pass along some other information that is important

to know. We need your help and that is addressed in item #3 of this

email.

1. The Osan Trick or Treat Bash is scheduled for Thursday, 1530-1730

hrs. In some advertisements, it shows an end time of 9:30 pm.

2. We have a large turnout for the costume contest. Last year, we had

52 interested people but this year, it is approaching 100. We don't

want to take any opportunities away from anyone to compete so anyone

that comes to the Costume Contest at the O'Club will be able to enter.

Bottom line ... no need for further registrations. We will quickly

register you there at the club when you arrive. Our volunteers have a

good plan to adjust to the large amount of children that we are

expecting. As a reminder, the Costume Contest is scheduled for

1745-1845. Please make sure you show by 1745 for registration.

The first group to be judged will be our 10-12 year group, followed by

7-9, followed by 4-6, and then Infants to 3 which .... accounts for more

than half the entries.

3. Lastly, and more importantly, please talk to your friends and

neighbors and ask them if they have registered for the Osan Trick or

Treat Bash. There are two reasons we are asking people to register ...

1) we need an accurate count of children so we can communicate with our

38 offices/booths about the candy to purchase and 2) so we can provide

updates on this event as they become available. Because it is possible

we could eclipse 300 kids, we are expanding the walking area to

alleviate overcrowding to the best of our ability.

If you could, canvass your friends/neighbors and ask them if they have

emailed me. If not, please have them do that.

Again, more info to follow.

Osan Trick or Treat Bash

Good Afternoon,

I am organizing the Osan Trick or Treat Bash. The event will take place

on 28 October 2010 at Buildings 916, 936, 937, and 938. The event will

start at 1530 and end at 1730. If you are not familiar with this event,

let me explain a little about it.

The event is an opportunity for families to bring their children by the

buildings mentioned above and have a fun, safe afternoon walking

together and getting candy. We had 165 children last year and expect a

bit larger crowd this year since it was such a hit last year.

There is four ways to get involved:

1. If you would like to hand out candy, email me at

mark.reuss@osan.af.mil. Provide me your office number and location. I

will be starting the registration process soon and will let you know how

many children to expect and how much candy to purchase.

2. If you want to decorate your office and compete for a $75.00 grand

prize, let me know as well. Judging will take place on 28 Oct, at 1000

hrs. The one change from last year is there is only one prize-winner

take all. 51 CPTS won last year and we do have 7 AF eligible to compete

as well. Competition should be good.

3. If you have children and would like to bring them, you can go ahead

and email me. I will take down the information and provide you more

details as we get closer.

4. If you want to volunteer to help in escorting, set-up, tear down,

children costume contest, please let me know. This event requires a lot

of help and I think the volunteers had just as much fun as the children

did!

Custom Card/Invite Designer: Kara Boynton

Hi. I'm Kara, a military wife and mother of two. Soon after I became a Mom, I found myself in a whole new world of birth announcements, holiday photo cards, and birthday invitations. I wanted something cute, personalized, customized, colorful, yet affordable. I quickly discovered I could meet these demands myself. I've been designing invitations, cards and announcements for family and friends in the States and I'd like to offer my services to the families at Osan as well. Printing services are even available on base at Studio 51, which means you can have those invites ordered, customized, printed and in your hands in about one week!

I love to incorporate your ideas or if you find an invitation/announcement that you like online, just send me the link and I can include those elements in a design just for you!

Photographer: Karen Davis

Hi all!  I decided to add a section on the blog for anyone who has a home-based/freelance business that they'd like to get out there.  There are people here who are seeking certain goods/services (i.e. Mary Kay, PartyLite etc.)  and there are people here that can provide those services.  I personally needed a photographer and found one through word of mouth.   If you would like me to post your information up about your business, please email me at:  opn_blog@yahoo.com

I would like to share info on Karen Davis, she's a military spouse who happens to take incredible photos!
Here are a couple from my maternity photoshoot:

Need Volunteer!

Just wanted to put out there that the lady who was in charge of organizing the Swap parties, is no longer able to do it.  So if anyone is interested please let us know!  I think usually they held them in the rec rooms of the Osan towers so that it was convenient for most to meet!

With the fall and winter weather coming, it would be nice to be able to trade out any warm clothing you don't wear or that children have grown out of!

This would also be good for trading toys or anything else!

Again, please consider volunteering-  I think its a great idea that shouldn't go away!

Nature Luminary Candle Votives

What you'll need:

-leaves and foliage
-glass votive holder or jar
-white tissue paper
-white craft glue
-water
-paintbrush
-tealight candles

How to make it:

-Collect small leaves and other foliage from outside. Be sure there’s still some life in the leaves – they shouldn’t be too dry or crumbly. (Note: We found several of our leaves on bushes as their leaves are smaller.) Once selected, lay leaves in a single layer and place a large book on top to flatten them. Leave for an hour or two.

-Spread a layer of white craft glue on the outside of the votive holder. Stick the leaves to the glue and press into place. Let dry.

-Mix equal parts of water and white craft glue to create a decoupage paste.

-Tear tissue paper into squares about one to two inches in size.

-Use a paintbrush to glue the tissue paper over the leaves using the decoupage mixture. Overlap the tissue paper and make sure all of the glass is covered. Carry over the lip of the votive holder as well and be sure that the tissue paper is decoupaged against the inside of the glass.

-Allow the jars to dry overnight.

-Place a tea light candle inside each votive holder!

Holiday Greetings Recording session

Team Osan,

An Army and Air Force Hometown News Service holiday greetings team will

setup here Oct 14-15 from 0800 to 1700 behind Turumi Lodge at the Lodge

pavilion.

The team will record individual 10 to 20-second greetings for the

holiday season aimed at family and friends back home. Anyone with a

family tie within the U.S. and its territories are eligible.

There are a few guidelines to make sure greetings are seen by family and

friends during the holidays:

1. Service members need to wear their duty uniform

2. Family members need to be with their sponsor, unless their sponsor is

deployed. If that is the case, the family member should mention that

fact in her or his greeting.

3. Family information is vital. Names of family members, their

relationship to you, their street address, city, state and ZIP Code, as

well as phone number needs to be included. Stations often let family

members know when the video will be aired, and in some cases, will

interview the family for

extended coverage. If you have family in a different area, you can fill

out a second card and send a greeting to that area as well.

4. Try to break away during off-peak times during the day to conduct

your interview. The team will normally be in an area throughout the day,

so try to avoid the "rush" times of lunch and after work.

5. When in front of the camera, reading a script is not necessary, but

it may be helpful to take a moment to plan out what you'd like to say.

The main points to get across include your name, your family members'

names, where you are stationed and who you'd like to send the greeting

to:

"I'm Staff Sergeant John Williams with my wife Kathy and sons Kevin and

David stationed at Osan AB, Republic of Korea. We'd like to say seasons'

greetings to our family and friends in St. Louis. Hi Mom, Hi Dad. We

love you, miss you and hope to see you soon."

The video and audio greetings are packaged according to geographic

areas, normally by state. In large states like California, Texas,

Florida and New York, stations will get greetings based upon region.

Stations normally air the greetings throughout the holiday season, from

Thanksgiving through New Year's.

Each greeting will normally play more than once throughout the holidays,

and usually on more than one station.

All servicemembers, their families and DOD civilians who will be outside

of the U.S. during the holiday season are encouraged to participate.

Reminders will be sent out as the event draws closer, but mark your

calendars now. For more information, please contact TSgt Stacy Foster or

Rainbow Jell-o Jigglers

I picked up a 6oz box of blue, yellow and red jello plus a box of knox gelatin. To get these fabulous layers, mix the blue jello with an envelope of the knox gelatin. Pour in two cups of boiling water. Dissolve the gelatin. Add 1/2 cup of ice. Stir until thick. Remove any remaining ice cubes and any bubbles that may have formed. Pour into a 9×13 inch pan. Let set in the refrigerator.

Repeat with the yellow jello and pour it over the set blue. Repeat with the red jello and pour it over the yellow. And there you have it, Rainbow Jello.

I won’t go into the whole primary and secondary color thing, but these colors, when stacked upon each other, create other colors. There is not an orange or green layer. It just looks like it when the red and yellow layers touch and then yellow and blue layers touch. Pretty cool.

We hope to see all of you there, and again, we are looking forward to getting started with the girls again!

Remembering Elvis Presley 1935-1977

Today (August 16th) marks the 33rd anniversary of the "King's" death.  May he rest in peace..

Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.
Biography Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.
He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.
His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

Origami Fun

Origami

I just recently found some websites on how to make origami to pass some time with the kiddos..  it was actually really fun.  I had picked up a box of square colored origami paper at a little store and since it only came with a few different examples, needed to search the internet to find more info.   Here are some great websites to check out.  Some are super easy and some can get quite complex!  But it's a great way to pass some time and be creative!

Key Lime Cheesecake

Crust:  2/3 cup Sugar
           2/3 cup Butter or margarine
3 cups Graham cracker crumbs (reserve 1/4 cup)

Filling:  1 cup fresh Lime juice
            1/4 cup Water
            2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
            1/2 cup Sugar
            5 Eggs, slightly beaten
            2 teasp. grated lime zest
            1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine
2 pkgs (8oz. each) Cream cheese (room temp)
            1/2 cup Heavy cream (chilled)
Whipped cream & lime slices for garnish

Prepare crust:  Stir crumbs, sugar and melted margarine in bowl.  Press over bottom of a 9" spring form pan and up sides.

Prepare filling:  Combine lime juice and water in sauce pan, sprinkle gelatin over top.  Let stand 5 mins to soften.  Stir sugar, eggs and zest into pan.  Cook, stirring over medium heat until almost boiling;  about 7 mins or until thermometer reads 160 degrees (do not let boil!).  Remove from heat; beat margarine and cream cheese in large bowl until well mixed about 1 min.  Gradually beat in lime mixture until well blended.  Refrigerate until mixture thickens enough to mound slightly when dropped from spoon, about 45 minutes.

Beat chilled cream in small chilled bowl until stiff peaks form.  Fold into lime mixture and pour into prepared crust.  Cover and refrigerate until firm 3-4 hours.

Run thin knife around inside edge of pan to loosen sides, remove side of spring form pan.  Garnish with whipped cream and lime slices around edge.  Use pastry tip to pipe on whipped cream, and sprinkle on extra graham cracker crumbs.  Store in refrigerator.  *yield 16 servings

Note:  Cut recipe in half and use a smaller pan for an 8 serving cheesecake

Civil Air Patrol

Civil Air Patrol develops youth through self-paced study of the art of leadership. Cadets learn how to lead through formal classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Through a graduated curriculum, cadets first learn to follow, then to lead small groups, and ultimately experience command and executive-level leadership, earning cadet grade and honors along the way. Topics include how to think critically, communicate effectively, make decisions, motivate and manage conflict. Self discipline and teamwork are emphasized.  You must be at least 12 but not yet 19 to join as a cadet.  Questions?  Email: NHQ127@gmail.com

Homeschool Co-Op

Hey, I was looking to start an elementary homeschooling co-op (grades 1-3).  My thoughts were to get a couple moms together to teach certain subject matter.  Each Mom would have her own curriculum to teach our group of children.  And if we get enough interest and you feel like you don't want to teach, you can do a special activity to augment the art, physical education or music side each week.

Any suggestion or interest please email,

Tae Kwon Do classes

Are you or your child interested in Tae Kwon Do or other martial arts classes?  The Osan fitness center holds adult tae kwon do classes among other martial arts classes.   I am currently a student of  Grand Master Mun who is a 9th degree black belt.  He has been teaching here at Osan for almost 40 years and actually taught Chuck Norris during his assignment here at Osan AB.  His son, Master Mun, teaches children's classes (which you can sign up with through the Youth Center).  They teach World Taekwondo Federation style.

You can find flyers posted in the fitness center about this or other martial arts classes.

Prenatal care: kick counts

Here at Osan, it's a little more difficult than it is in the U.S. to get immediate and high quality prenatal care if anything out of the ordinary happens, and we need to take responsibility for our own care, for our sake and that of our unborn children. Delivering a stillborn baby is one of the most horrifying things we can imagine, but it happens to seventy U.S. families every day, or once in approximately 150-200 deliveries. By contrast, SIDS claims about seven infants a day in the U.S. The good news is that like SIDS, the risk of stillbirth can easily be dramatically reduced.

A recent study found that 50% of moms that delivered stillborn babies noticed a decrease in movement in the days immediately prior to the death of their babies. Many stillbirths can be prevented with a simple test you can do at home: the daily kick count.

A daily kick count is just what it sounds like: a daily count of fetal movements. The count enables you to get to know the normal pattern of movement for your baby, so you can tell if the movements decrease, signaling fetal distress. There are a couple of ways to do kick counts, but here is an easy and effective one:

Pick a time of day when your baby is active; evening is generally good.

Time how long it takes to feel ten movements; record it.

Repeat every day; learn your baby's pattern.

If there is a significant decrease in movements or something else concerns you, get in for care immediately. Don't be afraid to kick up a big fuss to get what you need. Your baby is counting on you, too.

For more information, see the Baby Kick Alliance.

Eco-friendly cleaning ideas

What do these three items have in common? Well, they are all environmentally friendly cleaning supplies and with spring cleaning season just around the corner, it might be useful to learn about something you can do with these 3 things.

Vinegar:

Vinegar cleans like an all-purpose cleaner and can be used to clean, disinfect, and, yes, believe it or not, deodorize. Make a solution of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle and use it as you would any other all-purpose cleaner. It is most useful if put in a clean, new spray bottle. As with all new cleaning products, test it first in an inconspicuous area to ensure that the surface can tolerate the solution.

Because it is acidic, you should not use vinegar:
  • To clean grout
  • On marble
If you are sensitive to the smell of vinegar, add lemon juice to vinegar to make the smell of the vinegar more palatable. However, the smell of vinegar doesn’t linger when it dries.

Use it in the…

1. Bathroom to clean the bathtub, toilet, sink, and countertops.
  • Use pure vinegar in the toilet bowl to get rid of rings. After flushing the water in, pour the undiluted vinegar around the inside of the rim, then use a toilet brush to remove the stain.
  • A vinegar/water solution to remove soap scum and hard water stains. It is also a great way to clean and disinfect the floor. Before using it on tile, check to make sure it is safe.
2. Kitchen to clean the stovetop, appliances, countertops, and floor.

3. Laundry Room as a natural fabric softener. This can be especially helpful for families who have sensitive skin.
  • Add ½ cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle in place of store bought fabric softener. Vinegar has the added benefit of breaking down laundry detergent more effectively. (A plus when you have a family member whose skin detects every trace of detergent.)
Baking Soda:
Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers. Baking soda is great as a deodorizer. Place a box in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb odors. Put it anywhere you need deodorizing action.
Lemons:
Lemon juice is another natural substance that can be used to clean your home. Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon is a great substance to clean and shine brass and copper. Lemon juice can be mixed with vinegar and or baking soda to make cleaning pastes.
  • Cut a lemon in half, put a layer of baking soda on the cut section and use it clean dishes, surfaces, and other stains.
  • Mix 1 cup olive oil with ½ cup lemon juice and you have a furniture polish for your hardwood furniture.
  • Soak countertop stains in lemon juice for a few minutes (but not too long as it can be very corrosive!). Scrub the area with baking soda to make the stains disappear.
  • Lemon rinds can be ground in the garbage disposal to freshen the drain.
  • Pour very hot water with a little lemon poured down a drain helps kill odor causing bacteria in the drain.
  • Because lemon juice acts as a natural bleaching agent, it makes are create stain remover for fabrics as well. Put lemon juice onto stains on white cloth and allow them to dry in the sun. Stains will be bleached away.
For more information on these and other uses click here.

Happy Cleaning!

Lunar New Year: coming soon to a country near you

Seolnal (Lunar New Year) is the first of 2 major Korean holidays, typically falling on the second new moon after the winter solstice. (The second is Chusok in the Fall.) Seolnal is another important ancestral holiday in which the living celebrate their ancestry. Families fress in traiditonal Korean dress called "hanbok" and get together for traditional meals, food offerings, and family time including traditional holiday games, such as kite flying and a stick game calledyuk.
"They kneel and bow to their ancestors and elders. Family members wish each other prosperity and good fortune. Then they exchange gifts. Children receive lucky money, candy and fruit from the elders. The family spends time together and have rice-cake soup for breakfast. Children often take this day to play special New Year games.

In parts of Korea, people usher in the New Year with a ritual called Jishin Balpgi. Loud drums and gongs are played to scare off evil spirits of the old year. At the end of the day, friends and relatives join together for dinner to renew their friendship. Sol is a celebration of family and good friends. And for the Koreans, the New Year is about family and community." (http://www.familyculture.com/holidays/korean_new_year.htm)
In Korea, most places are closed on Lunar New Year and the traffic is typically terrible. It is generally advisable to plan a nice quiet day with the family at home and avoid driving with a large portion of the Korean population. Perhaps you can even play some of the traditional Korean New Year games or try some of the food that is eaten.

Make your own Play-Doh and other fun stuff

Here are some fun recipes to make with your kids.

Everyday Playdoh

Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/3 cup of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter in a bowl. Meanwhile, bring to boil 1 cup of water, one tablespoon of cooking oil and a few drops of food coloring. A little flavoring essence could be added, too. Pour hot mixture into flour mixture and stir. Add more flour if necessary.

Kool-Aid Playdoh

Add a packet of unsweetened Kool-Aid to boiling water in Everyday Playdoh recipe to strengthen the color and scent.

Self-Hardening Playdoh

Mix 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of flour, and add cup of water. Use the same day, air dry for about 48 hours, and paint if desired.

Peanut Butter Playdoh (edible)

Mix together 1-cup peanut butter and cup honey. Blend in powdered milk until mixture is not sticky, and a playdoh consistency. Double the recipe if necessary.

Fudgy Chocolate Playdoh (edible)

Mix together 4 tablespoons softened butter, 1/2 cup white corn syrup, 6 tablespoons cocoa, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 3 cups powdered sugar, and 3/4 cup powdered milk. Knead well.

Finger Paint

Pour about a tablespoon of liquid tempera on laminate surface or large piece of shiny paper. Add a few drops of mild dish soap.

Pudding Finger Paint (edible)

Add food coloring to prepared vanilla pudding, and finger paint on a paper plate.
